Your Feelings on Barbarians using shields. - Page 3

Which is why Barbarian shield skills need to be offensive skills, rather than cast a skill to give +x% chance to block for y seconds with z% extra defense.

Instead have the Barbarian smash his shield into something's face and then cleave an axe through the torso.

well if u look in the thread ull see I never suggest defensive shied skills Jusr why a shield is needed IamO. In fast the only shield based skills a spoke of were offensive in change (dmg and daze) and shield bast (dmg and stun).

Since defense was brought up maybe a single passive skill the increases the block value on a shield by X% per lvl.|||Quote:

Sorry, my reply was aimed at Pyrohemia, who stated that Barbarians don't need shields at all. I was merely disagreeing with him, not you.

Personally I also think that the use of offensive shield skill should reduce the effectiveness of a shield as a defensive tool, otherwise the character would be gaining the benefits of a shield AND the benefits of dual wielding.

Maybe something along the lines of half defense and half block for x seconds after using an offensive shield skill, with shields doing less damage than a dual wielding setup, putting an offensive shield Barbarian somewhere in the middle between a defensive shield barb and a dual wield / 2 handed barb.

Personal preference of course.|||Quote:

Sorry I get very defensive when im off my meds (hinds the typos, lol) if I remember right shields skills in D2 did like a % of ur weapon dmg as so they where mainly used for the daze/stun but lower dmg. Yea if would be lame for shield based skill to deo = dmg to that of a weapon. That the trade off lower dmg for more defense if needed.|||my vision of "my" barbarian is to never ever hold a shield. he will either have 2 weapons or 1 really big weapons. that being said he should have sheild skills for sure mainly cause so far i dont see any other class that should have one. my vision of the 4 characters already announced has no one really using a shield, witch doctor being the closest but never any of the ehavy shields which i am sure would be required later on. the 5th class i hope uses a bow so really i hope the xpac brings us a knight type of char like the paladin ones so i have a character that i see with a shield|||Well, shields are just an armor component. You don't need to have shield skills to boost them if they are balanced to be useful without those skills. I think all classes (except the bow one) can effectively utilize a shield in exchange for lesser offensive power.|||Well as it stands there aren't any skills for shields, there use to be.|||Diablo 2 allows shields to provide up to 75% blocking of all damage from any physical attacks. Using a second weapon in that slot, or a two-handed weapon, will not quadruple your damage output. Thus, if your goal is to survive a shield is an automatic choice. This is broken.

I would be very surprised if Diablo 3 allows shields to be anywhere near as powerful as that. From what little we have seen of shields so far in Diablo 3 they do seem to have been overhauled. Shields appear to block only a certain amount of damage and also seem to have reduced blocking chances.

With a fair and balanced shield system as I foresee in Diablo 3, and as seems to be supported from the little we have seen, I fully stand behind my opinion of barbarians with shields. A shield fits just as well in the hands of a barbarian as it would in the hooves of a mule.|||Quote:

I think that the Diablo-style barbarian represents themes that include ferocity, nobility, and discipline. There are the traditional elements of "frenzy" and "face crushing," but a precedent has also been set for discipline and control. In Diablo 2, barbarians wield numerous weapons and have defense-increasing skills. Defense-oriented builds become available. Shields were critical. However, I can understand if Blizzard wanted to stylize the barbarian as more of a barbarian. It could also be argued that non-concentration skills were natural defenses.

Ultimately, I would like shields to remain accessible to barbarians. There is some storyline support for them, and I enjoy having a variety of play-style options. I would like the opportunity to play a more defense-oriented barbarian or a S/S-style barbarian.

Purely from a multiplay standpoint, I think the removal of a paladin-like shield centric class will force bliz to make shield barbs, at the very least, a viable build. Considering that one of their trees is currently named the "Juggernaut" tree, and the term typically refers to something invincible, slow, and unstoppable, I'd guess the chances are good we might see some abilities there that end up working much better with a shield than without one.|||Barbarians should 2 hand (sword, martel (maul), big axe) when PvM 95% of the time in my opinion, in PvP thats when you put the shield on and work on block rate so you dont rely on only the DEF rating.. Shield in PvM is really only needed in a really tough difficulty where monsters can kill you in 4-5 hits with BO, and the shield would stall time to potion and kill things.|||Now shield don't nullify damage, so your 4-5 hits with, nonexistence, BO will be like 5-10 hits maybe, depending on shield type.
